Dr Mrunalini Devi Puar, the first female chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) and member of the royal family of erstwhile Baroda state, died here on Thursday midnight after prolonged illness.

Mrunalini Puar, 83, MSU’s second longest serving chancellor and third chancellor from the royal family of Baroda, were admitted at a city hospital.

“She was not keeping well for the last few days. She was a guide to our entire family,” Puar’s nephew and royal scion Samarjitsinh Gaekwad told TOI.

Puar’s body was brought to Laxmi Vilas Palace where her family and friends who used to fondly call her ‘Akka Raje’ paid their tributes. The final rites were performed at Kirti Mandir at around 6 pm.
