Dr. Venkatraman aka Venki is an Nobel Laureate from MSU. Working at MRC – Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, this Indian-born American structural biologist shared 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Thomas A Steitz & Ada E Yonath for ‘studies of structure and function of the ribosome’.

On 28th December, 2010, MSU conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) to Venkatraman during the University’s 59th convocation. That was the moment, the become important for both University and Venki, as he was attending his Life’s first convocation and the University was awarding a degree to Nobel Laureate for the first time too.

Venkatraman had Graduate degree in Science from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Year 1971 but was awarded degree of absentia, as he had left city for further studies. Venkatraman’s father, Professor C V Ramakrishnan also had a long association with city as he had founded MSU’s Biochemistry Department.
